Frequently Asked Questions:

How do I purchase an Altered Book?

At this time all available works have been collected. Altered Books are sold via waiting list and exhibitions - to be added to my list, please contact isobelleouzmansales@gmail.com

Are you accepting commissions?

I consider commissions on a case-by-case basis, however, I am taking a break from custom books in order to focus on other professional work. You are welcome to contact with inquiries.

Do you teach workshops?

I have an online class, “Introduction to Altered Books” available here.

Can I become a patron?

Absolutely, and thank you. To become a patron for my practise, please visit here.

What materials do you use?

Materials/brands vary, but I mostly use archival ink, colour pencils, watercolour paints, scalpel, and a variety of bookbinding glues.

Why would you cut up books? Where are you sourcing your books/paper?

All of the hardback novels I use for altering are either donated directly from schools, libraries, and personal collections, or purchased myself from these same places. They’re often heavily used, structurally damaged, or simply mass produced and of little value (many are romance novels and murder mysteries). My journal works are carved into both used and new mixed-media sketchbooks.

Most novels today are mass produced, forgotten, and/or in bad condition, which means a high percentage of them are eventually brought to landfills. I love books and simply view my work as one way to give discarded hardbacks a new life.
